The Bavarian short-eared mouse

SAVING AN ENDANGERED SPECIES

It is the pursuit of Germany’s rarest animal species, a race against time and against the extinction of the Bavarian short-eared mouse. A team of researchers is looking for the rodents in the wild. The almost 90-year-old discoverer of the species supports his young colleagues on their expeditions into wonderful Alpine landscapes – the expertise and intuition of the “old hand” are invaluable for the success of the mouse hunt. Herbert Ostwald’s film shows: Species extinction doesn’t just happen in exotic primeval forests and savannahs, but right on our doorstep – often unnoticed. And even if it’s not about tigers or elephants, the team of biologists take their job just as seriously.
