The River Rescuers

DEPLOYMENT IN BAVARIA

For centuries the rivers in Bavaria have been subjected to regulation – forced into straight courses between stone banks. With severe consequences: the loss of species-rich habitats. And, at high water, floods create devastating damage.

But now the river rescuers are in action. Ecologists, engineers and decision-makers in Bavaria’s rural districts – are trying to free the rivers Main, Inn and Salzach from their concrete corsets. A feat that pays a double dividend: river wilding and flood protection in Bavaria.
