Johannes and Stefan share a similar fate. Both survived a serious accident and then fell into a persistent vegetative state. A condition of deep unconsciousness despite their eyes being open. For them and for their families life changed completely from one day to the next.

For five years, filmmakers Kristin Raabe and Ilka aus der Mark visited the two men and their families again and again. The result is a moving documentary in the WDR series “Menschen hautnah” about people fighting for every small step forward, people who cope with setbacks and carry on. And who know with certainty that the fight is worth it.
