GOOD NEWS FROM PLANET EARTH – How can we protect ourselves from heat and flooding?
The climate crisis is worsening. This is leading to increasing flooding, extreme heat and forest fires in more and more places. But there are visionaries and researchers everywhere who are contributing to our protection with unusual ideas.
In Corsica, forest conservationists and researchers are making forests more resistant to fires – and are even setting controlled fires to achieve this. In the Allgäu region, a former firefighter is bringing together eleven communities that can only protect themselves against the next flood by working together. A group of people has also joined forces in Rotterdam: they are protecting their city from flooding through so-called sponge city projects. People in São Paolo, Brazil, are battling sweltering heat of over 40° Celsius. They have planted mini rainforests – small oases in the middle of the city that provide a little cooling for humans and animals alike.
