Resurrecting Eden: Malaysia

NEW HOPE FOR THE TROPICAL FOREST

In Malaysia, huge areas of rainforest have been cut down for decades to make room for gigantic oil palm plantations. Borneo, the third largest island in the world, has already lost half of its rainforest. But what nobody suspected for a long time is that a new way of thinking is taking place there of all places. The federal state of Sabah in the north-east of Borneo has not only decided to produce palm oil without further deforestation. What’s more, the forestry authority is now working hand in hand with nature conservation organizations to bring the rainforest back to where it was once cleared – for the benefit of endangered animal species such as orangutans, elephants and impressive hornbills.
